President Iván Duque on Environmental Responsibility

Iván Duque’s Speech Topics

  • Climate Change and Preserving the Amazon

President Iván Duque carefully balanced his country’s need of continued economic expansion with coal and oil exports with the goal of cutting greenhouse gas and methane emissions along with increasing environmental protections. How does a country that is reliant upon energy exports lead the way on environmental issues including the adoption of electric vehicles, recycling, and curbing deforestation? President Iván Duque believes that protecting Colombia’s natural habitats is inextricably connected to creating sustainable city living.

  • Leadership

During President Iván Duque’s presidency, almost two million Venezuelan refugees fled to Colombia. As the leader of a small country with limited resources and international assistance, President Duque garnered support from both local governments and the private sector to take care of 1.8 million refugees. With the help of technology and lobbying the international community to increase financial commitments, President Iván Duque managed a challenging refugee crisis while upholding Colombia’s constitution to give Venezuelans a temporary protected status and thereby granting them the same rights as Colombian citizens. President Duque demonstrated how to lead with humanity and bring people together to solve today’s problems.

  • Geopolitics, Energy, and Governance

Iván Duque was Colombia’s youngest president when he was sworn in on August 7, 2018. He faced a myriad of challenges including the Venezuelan refugee crisis, criminal networks, climate change, and COVID-19. A long-time public servant, President Iván Duque carefully balanced solving the problems facing Colombia while looking ahead to the future by prioritizing creating sustainable cities, the adoption of electric vehicles, and preserving his country’s biodiversity.
