Everyone loves to “wow” a client, a boss, a partner, and we work hard to get from now to wow. We push ourselves, push our people, and try to push the numbers. But it’s not always that hard; remember that you can’t push a noodle – you need to lead it, and leadership is all about principles. Here are three basics to bring to both your team’s table and your personal table in 2023:
I know this seems counterintuitive since money is one of the primary goals. But if you chase the things that help you make money, you’ll be in better shape all around. Increase your learning, and lead your team to increase their knowledge, whether it be product knowledge, technical knowledge, or knowledge of your client’s business. Reset your understanding of your customer’s needs and how best to serve those needs.
So many of us love to get lost in our work. It’s easy, it’s encouraged (by almost everyone except our families), and we often think it’s what we need to do to succeed. But experience has taught me that staying concentrated on one area of life leads to burnout and can wreak havoc, even in that area. In other words, focusing strictly on business is bad for business. Find the balance. Take care of yourself and recharge yourself physically, mentally, and spiritually. Come back to the desk refreshed.
Providing value isn’t about discounts or savings; it’s about what you can do or give to help someone solve a problem. What can you do to help your clients grow? How can you, as an individual, make your company better? Increase your empathy by figuring out the needs and feelings of those around you, and you become their go-to person. Maya Angelou said, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” Be the sounding board and the morale booster.
These ideas aren’t new, but the more often you’re reminded, the easier it is to use them. Increasing your knowledge, growing as an individual, and providing value to others will improve your relationships and increase your creativity. You’ll find it easier to solve problems and grow even more. Those things alone are bound to increase your sales and revenue and improve your life.
