Golazin, known internationally as Gola, is an exiled Iranian singer and women’s rights activist. Her first-hand experiences of life under the oppressive Iranian Regime have effectively shaped her as a fearless, international women’s rights advocate while living in exile from her home country; female solo singers are not allowed to record and release songs or perform publicly in Iran. Known by Iranian citizens as the Lioness of Iran, she irrefutably lives up to her reputation as she recently delivered a divine manifestation of bravery, advocacy, and justice with her historic album ‘CHANGE.’ Gola pushes to usher in an era of peace, gender equality, and reparations for those that have suffered at the hands of the Iranian Regime. Gola and her work have caught the attention of major media outlets such as The Times and The Sunday Times UK, i-D Magazine, C-Heads, and Hunger Magazine, while she continues releasing projects that amplify her mission to spread empowerment, peace, and love. She is among the first Iranian women to professionally sing in Farsi and English, as well as one of the most influential Iranian women to have been born and raised in Iran and have a pop English track in the UK Club chart. Gola’s latest self-taped and self-directed one-take video of her song “Haghame” went viral on the National Day of Hijab in Iran, and she became the face of “Hijab No Hijab” campaign. Her video received more than half a million views on her Instagram page in less than three days. Gola continues to spread her message of empowerment, peace, and love through her music, performances, and giving speeches around the globe.

Pursuing Your Dream
In this talk, Gola shares her experiences of dealing with obstacles, for example, being born in Iran where female singers are not allowed to sing, record music, or perform. In her case, being born into a conservative family did not help either. Gola talks about how not losing hope and finding a way toward your dreams is possible regardless of nationality, race, religion, gender, age, and family.

Gender Equality
Gola spent her childhood passing herself off as a boy by shaving her hair in order to enjoy playing football and riding bikes in the street in Iran. As an adult, the only way to pursue her calling as an artist was to leave Iran due to gender inequality, and she has now spent over ten years working in exile. Her work has come to focus on the struggle against inequality, the experience of being treated as ‘the other’ in her own country, and of being denied control and agency over her own body. In this topic, Gola shares her personal experience and her hopes for the future.
