Jamie Valvano, educator, cancer advocate, and motivational speaker, shares how harnessing the power of a united team can enable you to find victory in any circumstance.
My earliest memories are watching my dad passionately ranting on the sideline during a basketball game. In 1983, I witnessed him cutting down the nets after winning the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship. 10 years later, he faced his most formidable opponent when he was diagnosed with terminal cancer. At the age of 33, I discovered I had a genetic form of breast cancer. My decision to follow my dad’s game plan and assemble a group of supportive individuals allowed me to accomplish what I could never do alone.
Who comprises your team? As a coach, my dad examined his players and proactively found the athletes with the skills necessary to win. When establishing the V Foundation for Cancer Research, he asked individuals to lend their expertise to help him cure cancer. After 30 years, the V Foundation has raised over $350 million for cancer research and embodies the strength of working together. My dad’s legacy has inspired me to ask people to assist me as I navigate health challenges, raise a child with special needs, and move forward in my profession.
What is your bold vision? You must believe what you are trying to realize is possible. Coach V used to have his team practice “cutting down the nets.” He understood the energy produced by simply imagining our triumphs. Finding ways for your teammates to connect with your shared outcomes is essential to any motivational plan. Instead of only focusing on the day’s tasks, spend time recognizing victories that have occurred, and visualizing what has yet to happen.
Every year during March Madness, the image of my dad looking for someone to hug after the championship is continuously played. In that life-changing moment, he wanted to embrace his players. How are you celebrating with your teammates? There were seasons when my dad’s team was not winning, but he never abandoned his vision or stopped pouring himself into his players. No matter your situation, value your team members, and cherish their efforts.
Accomplishing your greatest visions alone may seem impossible. Yet, when you select gifted teammates, ignite your shared passions, and recognize daily achievements, you are one step closer to victory.
