He is also a national affairs analyst for MSNBC and a frequent presence across NBC News and MSNBC programming. Previously, he was a creator, executive producer, and host of The Circus (Showtime, 2016–2023), the acclaimed weekly documentary series that pulled back the curtain on American politics with unprecedented access and independence.
Earlier in his career, Heilemann served as co-managing editor of Bloomberg Politics and co-host of With All Due Respect on MSNBC and Bloomberg TV. He has also held senior editorial roles at New York magazine and written for The New Yorker, Wired, and The Economist, reporting from Washington, Wall Street, and beyond.
Heilemann is the co-author of the New York Times No. 1 bestsellers Game Change and Double Down, landmark accounts of modern presidential campaigns. The HBO adaptation of Game Change won five Emmy Awards, three Golden Globes, and a Peabody Award.
