Professor Chandra studies innovation, productivity, pricing and technology in health care, medical malpractice, and disparities in health care. He is a member of the Congressional Budget Office’s (CBO’s) Panel of Health Advisors, and an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Medicine, and the National Academy of Social Insurance. He is the recipient of the Kenneth Arrow Award for best paper in health economics, the Eugene Garfield Award for Economic Impact on Medical Research, the National Institute for Health Care Management (NIHCM) research award, and the American Society of Health Economists’ ASHE Medal.
His research and speaker interests sit at the intersection of innovation and regulation in healthcare and he has a keen interest in opportunities and challenges that transcend current policy debates and that will need to be tackled by government and firms — like improving quality, reducing the cost of care, encouraging innovation in the area of healthcare delivery, and treatments for Alzheimer’s and oncology, and smarter ways to pay for innovation.
His research has been published in leading journals such as the American Economic Review, Journal of Political Economy, the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, and Health Affairs. Professor Chandra has testified before the US Senate and the US Commission on Civil Rights, and has served as special commissioner on the Massachusetts Special Commission on Provider Price Reform.
